STORYLINE:
Protesters gathered outside the California hotel where the Chinese president is staying ahead of a casual summit Friday with President Barack Obama.
They also congregated near the resort where the meeting will be held later today.
The leaders are aiming for closer personal ties and progress on high-stakes issues including cybersecurity and North Korea's nuclear threats.
But the protesters were there chanting, yelling and holding signs alleging human rights violations by the Chinese government.
One man outside the Indian Wells Hotel said his father, Vincent Wu, had been tortured and interrogated while in prison in China.
According to a New York Times article from last December, Wu was arrested in June 2012 in Guangdong province and is to face trial.
The article says police in Guangdong have alleged Wu is a mafia kingpin involved in an illegal casio operation, kidnapping and extortion.
Wu's family says he is a Chinese-American citizen and businessman trying to build a shopping centre in the city of Huizhou.
Outside the Indian Wells Hotel, Wu's son Kenny told the Associated Press Friday that the trial has yet to start.
He'd like Obama and Xi to "resolve this issue as soon as possible."
About 100 members of Falun Gong from San Francisco peacefully gathered outside the Sunnylands resort in Rancho Mirage asking the Chinese government stop persecution of them.
Some protesters meditated along the side of the road, behind security barricades.
Obama and Xi are expected to somewhat dismiss diplomatic formalities during their summit, which is being called a "shirt-sleeves" summit.
