Insects have been a traditional part of the African diet for centuries. With over 500 edible insect species on the continent, it has immense potential to address food insecurity in Africa. 278 million people on the continent suffer from undernourishment, and 55 million children under the age of five experience stunted growth due to severe malnutrition. However, challenges like deforestation and over harvesting might pose ecological risks, driving the emergence of bug farms across Africa. From black soldier fly farming to produce animal feed to crickets processed for human consumption this video highlights the evolving landscape of insect-based food production. Much development of insect-based food concerning health and safety still needs to be done however insect-based food as an alternative protein source is already and integral part of the future.
