Europe’s Refugee Crisis
The Italian coastguard has found 50 dead people in the hold of a boat carrying refugees from Libya on Thursday. The Italian media reports they probably asphyxiated. The 430 survivors later said that smugglers had forced them to stay in the hold of the cargo ship. Meanwhile, Hungary has sent police to its southern border with Serbia for reinforcement. On Wednesday, police used tear gas to disperse migrants protesting at a refugee processing camp. Most of them are heading towards western Europe. The UN says 340 thousand asylum seekers have entered Europe so far this year.
Detentions in Tianjin Explosions
State media reports that authorities have detained twelve people linked to the explosions at a chemical storage facility in Tianjin earlier this month. They’re accused of ‘dereliction of duty’ and ‘abuse of power’. Five executives of the company that owns the warehouse were among those detained. Earlier this week, China fired the country’s work safety regulator. 139 people died in the explosions.
Putin and Sisi Meet
President Vladimir Putin and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el Sisi have met for the third time. The two men discussed economic co-operation, conflicts and the political situation in the Middle East. Putin suggested that co-operation between Egypt and the Eurasian Economic Union is possible with the creation of a free trade zone. Russia also plans to help build a nuclear power plant in Egypt.
Obama to Visit New Orleans
President Barack Obama is set to visit New Orleans to mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Thursday. Katrina caused flooding in the city for weeks. Two thousand people died and a million people were displaced. Obama called it a ‘terrible natural disaster’ but said that the government had also failed to respond rapidly. He is expected to discuss the need for the federal government and local communities to be prepared for natural disasters caused by climate change.
