Ana Paula Baptista Grade Zacarias was appointed the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal in 2017. Secretary of State Zacarias has a distinguished career in the diplomatic service, having served as Head of the EU Delegation to Brazil; Head of the EU Delegation to Colombia and Ecuador; Deputy Permanent Representative of Portugal to the European Union; Deputy Permanent Representative in the delegation of Portugal to UNESCO, Paris; and as the first resident Ambassador of Portugal to Estonia.
