Turkish donors are ordering hundreds of containers for delivery to areas struck by two massive earthquakes, as the disaster forced tens of thousands of people to stay outside their homes in freezing cold.
Istanbul-based Karmod said it’s stopped exports to keep pace with the surge in demand from donors in Turkey, according to Mehmet Cankaya, the company’s chief executive.
“We’ve doubled output to 50 container homes per day. Three hundred workers are working round the clock to build them,” he said by phone.
It’s only one of the countless companies racing to deliver much-needed aid to cities hit by twin earthquakes with 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude on Monday. The disaster has overwhelmed the government’s emergency response agencies, spurring efforts across Turkey to collect everything from blankets and canned food to diapers and heaters and send them to quake survivors.
The massive temblors that struck 10 provinces in southeast Turkey have killed nearly 18,000 people in the country and neighboring Syria. While many more are trapped inside collapsed buildings, survivors are facing freezing temperatures at night.
