As many as 100 homes were destroyed by the storm that roared through Virginia Beach on Sunday night.
Firefighters and cleanup teams were on the streets clearing debris, which included massive pieces of peoples' homes, including complete roofs, as well as large, fallen trees.
In order to restore power to hundreds of households, powerline personnel were also on hand to sweep the roads of fallen pylons and repair broken transmission lines. Both Dominion Power, the regional energy provider with its headquarters in Richmond, and Virginia Natural Gas were sending crews to residences with gas leaks.
Just before six o'clock on Sunday, a violent tornado struck the city's Great Neck neighbourhood, prompting the mayor to announce a local state of emergency.
