While India got its independence on August 15, Goa was still under Portuguese rule till 1961. The reason is that Goa was under their rule since 1510. Britishers only started ruling in 1858. When negotiations and protests failed, Portuguese attacked a Satyagraha march killing 32 people. In response India launched operation Vijay. It was the first combined attack of all three forces of India - Navy, Air Force and Army. Within 32 hours they were able to kick Portuguese out of India. Interestingly, singers like Lata Mangeshkar also contributed to the war by conducting concerts who's money was used to fund war.
