Public science and technology literacy is an increasingly vital part of life in modern society. As researchers and innovators, we need to engage people on the topics that matter to their day-to-day lives like climate change, biotechnology, and online safety, while stimulating their curiosity about others like human origins. Science Communication is vital in enabling evidence-informed decision making at personal and institutional levels. Also it engenders greater participation in public debates and policies.
This JOGL Africa Community session is aimed at strengthening the capacity of participating researchers, innovators, project leaders, and JOGL Africa Community members in the science and art of Science Communication and Community Engagement, by exposing them to cutting-edge strategies and practices that bridge the gap between science and the public. This is to enable them to better engage their target audiences with their research and innovations, leading to wider impacts of their work. Ultimately, the event:
● Introduced concepts, practices, and tools to effectively communicate complex scientific topics
● Promoted exchange of experiences in science communication and community engagement
● Encouraged brainstorming of innovative citizen science and public participation project ideas
● Connected researchers, innovators, science communicators, and students who want to better engage their communities and target audiences
