Hey guys, Toyhouze here. Now If you saw my class picking guide you probably saw I rated rogues pretty low. And if you didn't see it, the link is in the description below if you need help deciding which class to play. So I figured it's about time we dive into why this is, or is not the case, and how you can still succeed as a rogue even if the odds stacked against you.
So were rogues terrible in PvE? Well, let's start by looking at some numbers. These are the DPS logs for Karazhan. Now Karazhan isn't as hard for rogues as some other raids with boss mechanics that were tough on melee, and already we're seeing rogues lag behind on the damage meters. Why is this? Well, one argument is that rogue's gear early on just isn't as helpful as some of the other classes. If you look at some of the gear for other classes, say hunter, you have the Beast Lord set, with a set bonus that grants on equip: Each time you use your kill command ability, your attacks ignore 600 of your victim's armor for 15 sec. So that's a crazy good set bonus. For rogues, their pre-raid best in slot bonuses range from chance on hit attack power bonuses to hit rating. Really not anywhere near a guaranteed "attacks ignore 600 of your victim's armor".
So rogue's have a rough start.

Let's look at the raid logs of Gruul's Lair. Pretty much all hunters with some warlock sprinkles. Why are hunters winning on all logs? This goes back to that Very strong set bonus from the beast lord set – armor penetration. This is gained from a dungeon set from normal, so it's pretty easy to get. And no other pre-raid set bonus is nearly as strong. 4 piece tier 5 would beat it but it's really a small improvement. On top of the good gear, Hunter's by default do good damage.

So back to Gruul's layer.

This raid is a little more tough on melee with knockbacks like ground slam, Gronn Lord's Grasp which is a stacking debuff after a ground slam reducing movement speed by 20%, stacking 5 times, then causes the Stoned effect for 5 seconds.
