Qualitative research findings can be difficult to write up in your dissertation results chapter. Here are 7 tips to help you showcase your findings in a concise, compelling, impactful way!
When it comes to presenting qualitative findings in the results chapter of your dissertation, it can be difficult to know what to do.
After all, qualitative research taps into the complexities of the human experience, and that can result in a large volume of data, which is difficult to distil into a neat, logical findings chapter!
It can be tempting to want to include ALL your data! Lengthy quotes from in depth interviews, extensive ethnographic fieldnotes, extracts from documents or sources. You worked hard to collect and analyse it, you want to show it off!
Whilst it’s important to be transparent in your results chapter, so your examiner can see how you’ve arrived at particular interpretations or conclusions, you need to take care not to overwhelm the reader with too much qualitative detail!
There are also a whole host of other issues unique to reporting qualitative data, for example maintaining ethical principles such as anonymity, confidentiality and integrity.
So, it's not the easiest thing to do, but it can certainly be more straightforward once you know a few of my insider tips.
By the time you’ve watched this video, you will feel much more confident about tackling your qualitative findings chapter. You’ll be aware of some of the common mistakes, and you’ll be equipped with some handy action points to make this stage of your research a little less difficult.
