In this training session, my Uke of large stature is pretending that a green leaf is a knife so that he can attack me with the same force and commitment as a person who wants to kill me in the street.
e.g he is at liberty to make unpredictable swings, hold the "knife" how he likes, and retract the arm.
Therefore I am under pressure to make my techniques work with live resistance.
I successfully defended myself with Aikido techniques/principles by shortcutting the big stylized movements you often see in the dojo.
However please note, that I could never make up something effective on the spur of the moment without developing muscle memory, timing, and martial power through training in the type of stylized Aikido kata often seen in beautiful Aikido demonstrations, and deemed unrealistic by onlookers.
