#Banana #Dog
These are questions that have been on the minds of dog owners.
My chihuahua was once a victim, and I thought I would lose him.
Thanks to my veterinarian that told me it swallowed banana peels.
Owning a dog gives you knowledge about their feeding habit, and what their digestive system can take.
And this includes fruits like Bananas.
Serving bananas to your dog should be in moderation but not the peel.
It makes your dog uncomfortable.
The truth is, bananas are an excellent treat for dogs.
They enjoy it, but it is not every part that should be eaten, especially the peels.
The peels contain high amounts of fiber and are at risk of intestinal blockages.
When your dog suffers a blockage, it starts to vomit, loses hydration, and stops peeing as often.
This causes diarrhea or severe vomiting, especially in small dogs.
If it is so severe, your dog might experience weight loss and sluggishness.
Different types of blockage can affect your dog.
Some occur in the dog’s stomach and in the intestines.
And once the stomach accumulates too many fluids, gastric obstruction becomes inevitable.
But, do not panic.
Most times, it takes a few hours after swallowing the peels for your dog to be fine.
However, if symptoms persist, it is advisable to visit a veterinarian.
But What If Your Dog Eats Dried Or Rotten Banana Peels?
Well, there is no remedy when this happens.
The concentration of the fiber increases when the peels get dried or rotten.
This is dangerous especially for dogs less than a year old.
They find it hard to digest the fibrous peels.
So, if your dog eats dried or rotten banana peels,
Unfortunately, you can't save it.
Is There A Dog Breed That Banana Peels Doesn’t Affect
Well, there is no breed of dogs that is free from the adverse effects of swallowing or eating banana peels.
However, the impact of eating banana peels is more prominent with smaller breeds than larger ones.
So What Is The Best Way To Feed Your Dog Bananas?
Well, because of the useful nutrients in bananas,
It is still advisable to feed your dog bananas in moderate amounts.
This would prevent obesity, and diabetes common in sedentary dogs.
But, you shouldn't starve your dog because of that.
A healthy dog is one that feeds well.
And the best feeding habit for your dog is when you adopt the 90/10 rule.
90% from their dog food and 10% from fruits.
You cannot monitor your dogs every time so you should always dispose of the peel after feeding your dog.
But, if you think your dog should have some of the fiber in the banana peels, feel free.
But be sure it's an older dog, and the peels are well mashed to aid digestion.
