This hungry Kereru was only meters away from my house this afternoon, so I quietly went out onto the balcony with my camera.
The kereru (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) is a large fruit-eating pigeon, endemic to New Zealand. They are a taonga (treasure) of cultural and spiritual significance to Maori and an iconic species to all New Zealanders.
Kereru inhabit a wide range of habitats including native and exotic forest, rural, and urban areas. They eat the fruit of native plants, but when fruit is scarce during winter most birds also eat leaves.
