The title of the talk: Injection grouting for delaminated wall paintings: approach, design, challenges
Wall paintings are complex porous systems, typically composed of several layers. Such layers may suffer from lack of adhesion, potentially resulting in delamination between support and plaster and/or between plaster layers. When severe, such a phenomenon can lead to the total loss of the painting. While in the past conservators used to detach wall paintings undergoing delamination to avoid their collapse, this practice is now rarely used, and their stabilization on site is preferred. Such stabilization is undertaken through injection grouting, introducing in the delamination a compatible, adhesive material with bulking properties. The injection grout should tailor the specific case under consideration. Starting from setting the performance criteria for the intervention, the grout is designed and undergoes testing (field and/or laboratory testing), until satisfactory for implementation. Injection grouting typically involves large amounts of water, potentially detrimental for original water-sensitive materials and problematic in case of contamination with soluble salts. Recently, injection grouts with reduced water content were designed and studied, in order to limit the amount of water involved in the intervention and the problems mentioned above.
