The open-field system was a system of ploughing in Europe during the Middle Ages.
Each village had a few large fields, ploughed into narrow strips - these ridges & furrows (sliones) became units in landholding before the enclosure Act.
Surviving ridge and furrow field patterns can be seen in the UK.
