Nhlanhla "Lux" Dlamini, leader of South African anti-immigrant vigilante group Operation Dudula, has been released on bail after his arrest March 24 on charges of housebreaking, theft and malicious damage to property.
South Africa has been beset by xenophobia breakouts fueled by an increase in unemployment. Since January, demonstrations have been held regularly in several cities, with protesters demanding that foreign employees, accused of "stealing" South Africans' jobs, be fired.
In addition, President Ramaphosa recently urged South African employers not to employ undocumented foreign nationals to avoid tensions with citizens in the country. “When employers knowingly hire undocumented foreigner workers, they are breaking the law...Let’s all of us do the right thing," Ramaphosa said during his speech to mark "Human Rights Day."
