Why are alkali metals soft?
Alkali metals have one electron in the outermost shell. As a result, the metallic bonding between the atoms is weak. Thus there is a weak binding energy in their lattice. Hence, alkali metals are soft where they can be cut with a knife.
Note: **Alkali metals are malleable (can be beaten into sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into thin wires).
