Lake Pamvotida (Pamvotis), Ioannina, Greece
Lake Pamvotida, also known as "Pamvotis" in ancient times, is the largest lake in Epirus and the second oldest in Europe. It is located near the city of Ioannina and is a beautiful gem of the region. The lake is believed to have existed for over 10,000 years and is supplied by Mount Mitsikeli, Drabatova, Sendeniko, and Krya Springs. It covers an area of 23 square kilometres and sits at an altitude of 470 meters above sea level.
The lakeside is surrounded by thick reed beds and dense thickets of willows, poplar trees, and giant plane trees, which shelter many local and migratory birds. The lake's perimeter is 33 km, and its maximum width and length are 5 km and 7.5 km, respectively. The lake's depth varies from 3 to 13 meters.
Lake Pamvotida is a delicate ecosystem that belongs to the European Network of Protected Areas. It is home to various rare flora and fauna species, such as crayfish, sheatfish, carp, ducks, eels, and many amphibians and migratory birds. The only island in the lake, which the Greeks inhabit without a name, is called Nissi, meaning island in Greek. The island is home to the Historical Museum of Ali Pasha and several post-Byzantine monasteries.
The lake's favourable wind conditions are ideal for water skiing, rowing, and canoeing.
