The Department of Biological Sciences is a multi-dimensional academic unit that encompasses diverse areas of biology, including cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology and bioinformatics. Our curriculum has been designed to train our students in scientific rigour, technical know-how and reasoning skills. It is an interdisciplinary department offering outstanding research and education opportunities. Currently, we have 41 PhD faculty members with diverse research expertise in human genetics, drug discovery, phytochemistry and natural products, microbiology and immunology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. From 2019-20, our faculty has contributed towards 83 publications in national and international impact factor journals. Moreover, our faculty has been on various international research trainings as well.
The department emphasizes on providing a strong foundation in Biological Sciences through quality instruction, curricular innovation and experiential learning. Our first academic programs - BS Biological Sciences in Biotechnology, Genetics and Microbiology have been launched successfully in Spring 2020 with the mission to prepare the next generation of leaders in research, academia and industry through a focused, high quality biological sciences undergraduate program, majoring in these fields, with an emphasis on research relevant to the needs of our population. MPhil and PhD programs are expected to commence in Spring 2021. Additionally, our research facilities have been established and are functional, NUMS. At the moment, DBS faculty is conducting 36 projects worth PKR 39.53M.
