Alright, what an experience! These are the last two and by far most difficult trails of the Magnificent 7 (Mag 7). They are absolutely incredible! This is my first run of these trails, and I want to provide some advice for anyone venturing to hit these trails!
First, all the trails leading into the Gold Bar 4x4 only make up a small portion of the amount of effort you are going to be putting into this trail. Those trails are incredible and fun, but if you're feeling tired before the Goldbar 4x4, then be aware that it gets significantly more difficult not only more technical but also a lot more tiring. This trail is much harder (physically, mentally, and technically) than the whole enchilada, so if the whole enchilada beats you up, you may want to try this another time.
Second, knowing its difficulty and depending on the temperature, plan your hydration carefully. Like I said earlier, these miles are very hard miles! If I could compare Gold Bar Rim to anything, it would be to Gooseberry in Saint George, but more technical and exhausting. Gold Bar Rim is not a downhill trail! It's reminiscent of a mesa trail!
Third, don't risk your life on the death zone of Portal. Just walk, and to make you feel much better about walking, the death zone is not even close to the cool parts of Portal. The death zone trail on its own is a mediocre but extremely beautiful blue trail with extremely high consequences for the smallest mistakes, so just walk. Walking isn't all that scary, but if you're afraid of heights, I imagine this would be terrifying!
Ultimately, this is an extremely fun, dangerous, technical, exhausting, and epic trail! It is highly recommended for those who are physically and technically skilled enough! If you feel like you lack physically or technically, it won't be fun for you!!
