St Buryan Church is a historic parish church dedicated to St Buriana in the Penwith village of St Buryan in West Cornwall. The present building, the castle-like tower of which can be seen for miles around including from nearby Chapel Carn Brea and Carn Euny Ancient Village, dates from the late 15th century, however there has been a church here since 930 AD. All that remains of that previous church are some bare stone arches which can be seen a the front left of the modern building, at 3:07 minutes in to the video.
An interesting fact about St Buryan Church is that the bells in its tower are the six heaviest peal of bells in the world. Individually speaking, its treble bell is the third heaviest treble bell in the world, and its tenor bell is the heaviest bell of any six peal of bells anywhere in the world. The tower was originally built to accommodate 8 bells, however in the late 19th century it was recorded that just three bells were present. That number has, of course, since doubled in the early 19th century. The bells were restored between 1990 and 2001, and the church itself was restored in the first part of the 2010's.
Located in the churchyard is a Medieval granite wayside cross, on top of a plinth of steps. This is one of the oldest structures in the grounds of St Buriana's Church, and outside the gate of the church, there is another Medieval granite wayside cross, which originally came from the churchyard. St Buryan Church is surrounded by ancient sites, and the church can be seen from many of them including Merry Maidens Stone Circle, Boscawen-Ûn Stone Circle, Trevorgans Menhir, and Caer Bran Hillfort to name just a few.
The parish of St Buryan is the largest in the area, and is bordered by the parishes of Sancreed, Paul, St Levan, Sennen, and St Just-In-Penwith.
