On July 26, Egyptian president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, abruptly announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal Company.
The historic decision triggered the Suez Crisis, (1956), which became an international crisis in the Middle East and cause the Suez War just three months later and brought an end to British influence in the region.
