In July 2017, 13 women were freed from the grip of a violent criminal gang. They had been manipulated and taken from their homes in Bulgaria to Spain, where they were forced into prostitution. To break this complex human trafficking operation, the EU connected national police forces and prosecutors to organise an investigation across Europe. The stakes were high, and working together across borders was the only way to guarantee success.
