On December 7, 1988, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck northern Armenia, which was then part of the Soviet Union. The quake leveled buildings across the region. Thousands died. RFE/RL's Armenian Service chief Harry Tamrazian traveled to the town of Gyumri, once known as Leninakan, 25 years after the natural disaster. He found many residents struggling with poverty, poor housing, and a lack of hope for a better future.
