Shirdi Sai Baba lived in Shirdi for sixty years showering wonderful leelas on the people there. Nobody knew for sure his parents or his original place of birth.
Baba lived his adult life in Shirdi. He seemed like a simple beggar, dressed in torn clothes, having no need for any materialistic things. Claiming to be neither Hindu nor Muslim he lived in an abandoned Mosque.
Every day he took food from a few people, making his rounds with a begging bowl, door to door. He used to utter Sabka malik Ek, which literally means one God governs all. He preached love, compassion, forgiveness, charity, inner peace, contentment, and belief in God.
Baba also gave “Udi” and demanded “Dakshina” from his devotees. The “Udi” which produced many healings and miracles was to remind devotees that their bodies will be reduced to ashes in the end. The “Dakshina” or charity/donation from his devotees was to remove people’s attachment to money and purify their minds.
The core teaching of Shirdi Sai Baba was – Shraddha and Saburi. Shraddha stands for faith, while Saburi means patience. He said the practice of these two virtues could help conquer all the sorrows and gain unconditional happiness.
