Police is not to be paid any fee or money for registering the FIR and subsequent investigation. If anybody in the police station makes such a demand, a complaint should immediately be made to the senior police officers.

An FIR is a very important document as it sets the process of criminal justice in motion. It is only after the FIR is registered in the police station that the police takes up investigation of the case.

The difference between a first information report and a police complaint is that an FIR relates to the cognizable offence whereas a police complaint can be filed for both non-cognizable and cognizable class of offences.
