All 2.1 million federal workers are about to get 12 weeks of paid parental leave. This is huge. The United States lags behind most other developed nations who offer paid parental leave, a practice proven to provide crucial parental bonding time and improve worker retention, just to name a few of the benefits. Currently, there is no federal law that requires paid parental leave and the Family Medical Leave Act only applies to a fraction of the US workforce and only provides for 12 weeks of unpaid leave. While this new law has limitations and is not as generous as some other bills pending in Congress - for instance, it does not provide paid leave to care for a sick family member - it is a quantum leap forward in US policy. And with the federal government leading the way, more private sector companies will be pressured to follow suit.
