Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to introduce and reinforce the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles.) These seven communitarian African values are: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).
The intention of Kwanzaa is to fill a void with the life-enhancing values offered by the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, thereby creating an awareness of a more meaningful existence for ourselves, our children, our families, our communities and our world.(Adopted by Kwanzaa Charlotte, NC Organizing Team, 1989; Updated by Kwanzaa Charlotte, NC Organizing Committee, 2014)
Kwanzaa Charlotte is a collective of conscious individuals and organizations who share leadership in the mission to share with the Charlotte Community the benefits of practicing the principles of Kwanzaa by presenting educational and cultural activities.
Many Kwanzaa Charlotte CityWide Celebrations include sign language interpretation. Visit the program website for more detail - www.kwanzaacharlotte.com.
