The Kitchener Stitch is an easy and almost invisible way to join two knitted pieces together. But what if you have to purl projects (inverse stockinette stitch)? Well, then you need to adjust the technique a little bit to make it work. All you need is a tapestry needle, a pair of scissors and of course your knitting needles and the finished project.
You basically align the two edges parallel with an equal amount of stitches, and then you use the tapestry needle to graft purl stitches.
you start with two preparational stitches:
A) Go into the first stitch on the front needle knitwise
B) Go into the first stitch on the back needle purlwise.
From here you start with the regular repeat:
1. Go into the first stitch on the front needle purlwise and drop the stitch
2. Go into the next stitch on the front needle knitwise and keep the stitch
3. Go into the first stitch on the back needle knitwise and drop the stitch
4. Go into the next stitch on the back needle purlwise and keep the stitch
repeat these 4 steps until you finished the graft and the two pieces are joined with the Kitchener Stitch on the purl side. Pull the yarn tight (but not too tight) after each step.
Once you are finished, you can adjust the gauge by pulling the individual purl stitches tight(er) with the needle one at a time for a neat finish.
