First Snowfall of Winter 2024: A Garden in the Snow (USDA Zone 5b)
The first snowfall of winter arrived unexpectedly, marking the true beginning of the season. After a long, warm autumn where flowers bloomed longer and vegetables thrived later than usual, this sudden change came as a beautiful surprise. Here is a glimpse of our snow-covered garden, filled with the charm of winter's touch.
As the snow began falling on the evening of November 20th, I moved some potted flowers indoors, hoping to protect them from the frost.
Early the next morning, I ventured outside to capture the serene beauty of the garden, where snow kissed the late flowers and vegetables.
Though some buds will never bloom, the snowstorm transformed the garden into a magical white world.
By 9 AM, the snowstorm began in earnest—strong winds carried delicate snowflakes, blanketing the landscape and creating a true winter wonderland.
Covered in snow, the roses still revealed hints of their vibrant, standing out in striking contrast against the white."
Other plants, with their varying shapes and structures, displayed unique snowy silhouettes. For example, neatly trimmed evergreens resembled low walls, with thick mounds of snow piling on top. Meanwhile, deciduous plants that hadn’t yet shed their leaves showed different patterns, as their foliage influenced how the snow settled. Each plant wore its own distinct winter coat, highlighting the diverse beauty of the garden under snow.
This, perhaps, is the joy of observing plants in winter—a reminder of nature’s beauty even in dormancy.
The first snowfall of Winter 2024 began on the evening of November 20th and lasted into the afternoon of the 21st. As temperatures rise, the snow will give way to rain, leaving behind memories of this serene moment.
Thank you for joining us on this journey through our snow-covered garden. See you in the next time!💓💓💓
