In this video I want to show you 5 winter jobs that you can do right now. The first is looking at how you stop your clay pots freezing and becoming damaged using a very simple technique. I then use horticultural fleece to wrap around some plants growing in the soil which will protect them from the worst winter weather giving the plants a head start come the spring when they start growing. The pruning of Acers and Birches needs to be done now and not stray into February to avoid 'bleeding'
Improving the soil is fundamental to good gardening and by applying a layer of organic matter to the soil surface you can harness the power of the earthworms who will break down the matter and in doing so prep the soil beautifully for you come the spring.
The last job is harvesting the stems of hazel plants to use in the new year for creating natural plant supports. One of my favourite jobs at this time of year! I'll be showing you how to use weave these stems to create supports in early spring.
