Mining is a business that is decades behind in its use of technology to solve even the most fundamental challenges in the industry. One could even say that mining has been resistant to transformation –living on nothing but small incremental change and steadfastly avoiding that which could disrupt the status quo. According to Dr. John R. Spear, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Colorado School of Mines, “The mining industry is in desperate need of a technology intervention.”
Knowing this, then why try to transform an industry that has yet to take the first step toward meaningful change?
Here at NTT i3, we like to identify those “dark areas” that exist within the “industrial environments” of sensors, networks and data – and then explore the ways that hidden data can be brought into the light to make a difference. When we see where mining is today and the possibilities of tomorrow, there are clearly unique challenges where economic, social and quality of life issues can be addressed simultaneously. For us, that's a complex challenge worthy of attention.
