Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, aka SIBO, is a digestive condition I frequently see in my clinical practice here in Byron Bay, Australia. It is characterised by common symptoms including bloating and flatulence, burping, food intolerances and a change in bowel habits.
There are a number of different testing options. Aspirate and culture is considered the gold standard test but is only used in a research setting due to it's cost and invasiveness. SIBO breath testing offers an affordable and less invasive option but come with their own inherent issues.
In this video I will cover the three breath tests that are frequently used to assess the small bowel for microbial overgrowths. Lactulose breath test is the most common, glucose comes in as a close second and finally fructose can be used to screen the small bowel for SIBO.
