Restoring a Vintage Toy Lawn Mower:

It all started with an unexpected find at a local antique store—a weathered, toy lawn mower buried among other forgotten relics. It was missing its handle, and the plastic wheels had long since fallen apart, with a fractured motor assembly as the final mark of its age. Despite its rough condition, I saw potential in the piece. For just $2, I couldn't pass it up, so I brought it home, determined to give it a second life.

Restoration is never a straight path, and this project proved no different. The body of the mower was heavily pitted, each dent and scratch bearing the marks of a lifetime spent in enthusiastic play. I spent hours cleaning and sanding, trying to bring the metal back to a condition that felt worthy of its former self. After a meticulous process of prep work, I was able to powder coat the body in its original, vibrant red, which breathed new life into the worn frame.

Next, I had to tackle the wheels. With the originals too far gone to be salvaged, I turned to my laser cutter and crafted a set of new wheels out of MDF, carefully assembling them to match the original design as closely as possible. These wheels weren’t just functional—they brought the toy back to a point where it could stand on its own again, as it might have decades ago.

The handle was another challenge. After some creative problem-solving, I sourced an old fence, cut it down, and shaped it to make new handlebars that complemented the mower’s vintage look. It felt fitting to use reclaimed material for this part; after all, this entire project was about giving new life to the old.

In the end, the restored toy mower is a testament to the patience and resourcefulness that go into reviving vintage items. It’s no longer a forgotten relic—it’s a piece with a story, one that blends the character of its past with the craftsmanship of the present.
