If you want to make points (or other geometry types) a different size in QGIS, based on one of the columns in your dataset then you can do it really easily.
You just need to click on the *Data defined override* button in QGIS - you'll see these buttons everywhere in the Layer Properties for layers in QGIS. Once you get how it works you can do all sorts of cool and interesting things.
