Hold Segments - LPT Guy's Final Cut Pro Shorts

An alternative to adding a freeze frame clip to temporarily stop the action on screen, is called a hold segment. One key difference between freeze frames and hold segments is that hold segments remain part of the original clip, and you can adjust their duration within the clip. By default, a hold segment is two seconds long, but you can change the duration.

To add a hold segment to your clip:
1. In the timeline either:
- Click the clip with the frame you want to hold, then move the
skimmer to that frame
- Select a range within the clip in your timeline

2. From the Retime Pop-up Menu select hold, or use the keyboard
shortcut Shift + H
- If you selected a clip, a two second hold frame will be inserted
into your clip, at the skimmer position
- If you selected a range, a hold segment is created for the
duration of the range. First frame in the range is used as a still
frame

3. To adjust the duration, click and drag the segment’s retiming
handle.

4. Play back the clip to see the effect in real time.
