Guarda is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES of Switzerland. It lays in the far East of Switzerland, in the lower Engadin. The region is very interesting: It lays in the eastern Swiss Alps and it’s full of beautiful and authentic Swiss villages. Very characteristic about these villages and Guarda in particular are the many houses with their paintings. These are called Sgraffiti and usually decorate the door- and window frames. Guarda is a car-free village, thus you will have to park your car a few hundred meters in front and walk in from there. Alternatively, you may arrive by public transport; by this, you will be taken to the village centre. Guarda charms with its many beautiful alleys and houses but also fountains. These are very important in the local culture, because of the tradition called Chalandamarz. Guarda is also the hometown of “Schellenursli”, who is Switzerland’s most famous comic book figure. The book of “Schellenurseli” (A bell for “Ursli”) is probably the most told Swiss child story. Ursli is very present in the village, there is his house called “Casa 21” and a museum dedicated to him. Unlike on the book’s cover, you may no longer find the door at the “Casa 21”, because it was moved to another nearby house in the village. Guarda is very cute, charming, alluring and authentic. Because it’s car-free, the holiday feeling up there is really great. In addition: Guarda is one of the hidden gem Swiss villages; even during peak season, there won’t be many people. So make your way up to Guarda to enjoy a serene village and avoid the mass tourism elsewhere. All in all, Guarda is very beautiful, calm, peaceful, family-friendly and cheap! Thus, for people who love to travel on a budget, Guarda is a very attractive destination and secret tip!
Other interesting villages to explore nearby would be Ardez, Ftan and Scuol.
