The killings of 12 women in the Rochester area between March 1988 and December 1989 led to the Jan. 4, 1990 arrest of Arthur Shawcross, also known as the Genesee River Killer. Shawcross previously served 14 1/2 years in prison for raping and killing two children in Watertown in 1972. He was paroled in 1987 and moved to Rochester.
