STORYLINE
South Korean and the United States Marine Corps staged a large scale joint landing exercise on Wednesday on separate beaches near Pohang, in southern South Korea.
The show of force is part of a series of exercises aimed at improving South Korea's military readiness among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Wednesday's exercise featured some 2,600 South Korean marines, 16 navy vessel, 27 air force aircraft, 36 KAAV (Korean Assault Amphibious Vehicles) and six South Korean tanks.
While from the United States Forces, around 600 US marines were involved along with two naval ships.
The CH-53E, the largest and heaviest helicopter in the US military, was also expected to be deployed on Wednesday.
During the exercise, South Korea and US marine forces were deployed to land and secure target beaches using helicopters and amphibious vehicles.
Wednesday's exercise was hailed as a success by South Korean officials.
The series of drills and exercises are set to continue until November 7th.
