A way better destination than Shirakawago is WORLD HERITAGE AINOKURA Thatched Roof Village in GOKAYAMA, TOYAMA Prefecture. Why is it better? Way less tourists and a very natural feel with the same looks of traditional Japanese Thatched houses where you can stay overnight! Although you should book in advance as they might be sold out. I'm staying at NAKAYA RYOKAN traditional Japanese house, they prepare grilled fish on the charcoal in front of my table and have many local delicious dishes for the dinner & breakfast set included in your overnight price. it is advisable to have these meals because the village does not have many restaurants and chances to eat after 5 pm!!
I directly called Nakaya to make reservation, it is cheaper than through booking websites and in Japan the prices are lower for solo traveller if you mention it to them.
