(13 Oct 2018) LISBON FASHION WEEK KICKS OFF WITH ART DECO, 'EFFORTLESS CHIC'
Lisbon Fashion Week returned Friday (12 OCT. 2018) with the theme "Multiplex" for the Spring Summer season of 2019.
The theme takes in one heritage and many lives, and aims to bring new talent and new sensibilities to the runway.
The first day featured a collection from artist and designer Valentim Quaresma, who unveiled a collection inspired by Art Deco architecture and the industrial revolution. Structured garments were almost superhero-like. For the designer, sustainability is a key issue and a personal daily concern. The beautiful, structured pieces came from a mixture of materials such as organza, wood, aluminum and amber, and black and brown dominated the colour palette.
"The whole concept of the runway show was to begin in a futuristic way and to end – in a non-retro way – but to look back to the past to rethink the future. This revolution is also about sustainability, which is part of the collection but also an approach in my own studio. There's no waste - I've used every single piece of fabric for badges and this is a revolution I've also embraced for a long time in my own studio," said Valentim.
The first night of shows ended with established designer Ricardo Preto. For him, clothes are a second skin and a reflection of each person's state of mind at a given time and place. Preto designes for the modern woman, creating contemporary silhouettes using fluid materials, earth tones, blues, greens and mixed greens to celebrate Spring and Summer.
"It's effortless chic. I always try to to make a woman sophisticated but at the same time comfortable. As this is something I have been pursuing for many years now, I believe this collection is the best I have done so far," Preto said backstage.
This edition of Lisbon Fashion Week is, according to the organizers, about coexistence and embracing multiple perspectives – which Moda Lisboa has embraced during the 27 years it has been running. This is a time to celebrate the lively, organic and unique opportunities that fashion generates by gathering people from all backgrounds together in one place.
Lisbon Fashion Week will continue to present new collections for the coming season until Sunday 14th October 2018.
