Melur is second grade Municipality in Madurai district and Northern entrance to Madurai City and District. The name was derivated from Mela Nadu. It is the biggest taluk in Madurai district.
The town located on Madurai- Trichy NH 45B and has bus services to all nearby cities and towns like Madurai, Trichy, Chennai, Dindigul, karaikudi, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Sivaganga and neighbouring towns and villages.
