Video documentation of the UPLB Museum of Natural History-Fulbright PH Biodiversity Seminar on "Seeing the Forest for the Trees - The Utilization of Select Non-native Tree Species to Promote the Regeneration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems" by Norman Greenhawk, Proponent of Project Palaka and 2022 Fulbright Specialist Program Awardee on 27 May 2022.
SUMMARY OF TALK
Based on his 11 years in Puerto Rico, Norman will present information on historical reforestation efforts of the island. Puerto Rico is one of the most successful examples of reforestation in the world, going from 7% forest cover in the early 1900s to 65% forest cover currently. However, this reforestation was achieved with the use of both native and non-native tree species, as well as public and private initiatives, and the controversial social program “Operation Bootstrap”. Norman will discuss the social, political, and environmental ramifications of reforestation of the island of Puerto Rico, and how those lessons can be applied to the Philippines.
