Explore the incredible capabilities of the MGM-140 ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System), a groundbreaking long-range precision missile developed by Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) and Lockheed Martin. Designed to fill the gap between traditional artillery and airstrikes, the ATACMS has been a cornerstone of U.S. military strategy since its introduction. This tactical missile system is launched from platforms like the HIMARS and M270 MLRS, offering unmatched mobility and flexibility on the battlefield.
From its early combat use during Operation Desert Storm to extensive deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, the MGM-140 ATACMS has demonstrated its effectiveness in targeting high-value assets deep behind enemy lines. The system features advanced GPS and inertial guidance, making it highly precise even in adverse conditions. Its modular payloads, including cluster and unitary warheads, allow for adaptability against a wide range of targets, from enemy personnel and equipment to hardened installations.
More recently, the ATACMS has gained attention for its role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where it has been used to strike critical Russian military infrastructure. With its supersonic speed and a range of up to 300 kilometers, the ATACMS continues to be a vital tool in modern warfare, enabling decisive strikes with minimal risk to personnel.
Whether you're interested in its design, historical deployment, or battlefield impact, this video dives deep into the ATACMS story.
In the video I also use footage of HIMARS or M270 systems with a pod that has multiple visible launch tubes (meaning: not carrying an ATACMS missile). There is not a lot of public domain footage available, and because GMLRS and ATACMS rockets are both fired from the same systems, I chose to use that footage anyway to create a more interesting video.
