STORYLINE
The US special envoy for North Korea met with officials in Seoul on Monday during a visit aimed at restarting the deadlocked negotiations over North Korea's nuclear programme.
Stephen Bosworth flew to South Korea on Sunday for a three-day trip focusing on restarting six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea.
North Korea pulled out of the talks last year to protest international criticism of its long-range rocket launch.
Prospects for restarting the talks were further undermined following the sinking of a South Korean warship in March, which killed 46 sailors. North Korea flatly denies attacking the vessel and has warned any punishment would trigger war.
On Monday Bosworth met with acting South Korean Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo and other presidential officials.
"This is a very important stop," Bosworth told Shin.
"Now as we try to put together a strategy for the future, it's, I think, quite natural that we start by talking to you here in Seoul."
He is to travel on to Japan and China later this week.
Around a dozen peace activists gathered outside the South Korean foreign ministry building to protest at what they say are hostile policies towards the North by the South Korean government and the US.
They called for the resumption of the Six-Party talks.
Opponents of North Korea attempted to approach the peace activists, but were blocked by police.
