What is Sanjee's PhD research about? 💭
Models suggest that around half of all thermal radiation reaching the top of our atmosphere is in the far-infrared region. Despite this significance, the far-infrared spectrum at the top of the atmosphere has never been measured due to technical limitations.
This will change with upcoming space missions, including the European Space Agency’s FORUM mission. In preparation for this, researchers like Sanjee are exploring how atmospheric components like water vapour and clouds, as well as the surface itself, interact with the far-infrared spectrum from the ground. Sanjee's PhD is in support of the FORUM mission and focuses on ice clouds, which are a significant source of uncertainty in climate models but big players in the Earth’s Radiation Budget.
