A handsome middle-aged bear appeared on Pope Beach in South Lake Tahoe. He modestly walked past the fence and blissfully plunged into the water. The bear was wearing a collar with a chip. As the ranger later explained, these GPS collars are placed on bears that have been caught engaging in problematic behavior. They are taken for rehabilitation and, after some time, released back into the wild. Cubs that have lost their mother and been found for rehabilitation also wear these collars to monitor their whereabouts.
Our bear behaved wonderfully—just enjoying a bath and a stroll by the lake at sunset.
