Setting an exemplary example in wildlife conservation, Wildlife SOS and the IUCN-SSC Sloth Bear Expert Team declared the first-ever World Sloth Bear Day on 12th October 2022.
The #slothbear is one of the eight bear species found across the world, mainly inhabiting India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and presumably Bhutan. These bears are identified by their long, shaggy black fur, whitish patch on their chest, and curved claws.
With only about 6,000 to 11,000 Sloth bears found in India, they face various threats due to habitat loss, degradation, human-animal conflict, and poaching.
World Sloth Bear Day will help draw attention to the conservation and protection of the unique bear species endemic to the Indian subcontinent and listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List.
Hear what experts from the IUCN-SSC Sloth Bear Expert Team, Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, Central Zoo Authority, India and Wildlife SOS have to say about this special day!
