Our Primates team leader Amy is in Gunung Leuser National Park to highlight how closely oil palm plantations are encroaching on Sumatra’s rainforest – the home of precious and endangered wildlife such as Sumatran tigers, orangutans, Siamang gibbons and Asian elephants. This destruction and deforestation of their rainforest homes leave these animals vulnerable to poaching, death or capture for the illegal wildlife trade.
But it doesn’t need to be like this! International evidence shows that clear palm oil labelling on supermarket products leads to an increase in demand for sustainable and deforestation-free palm oil production.
We’ve joined with zoos throughout New Zealand to call for the clear labelling of vegetable oils, so kiwis can make informed decisions about the products they purchase.
Take action by sending an email to New Zealand’s Minister for Food Safety, Minister Damien O’Connor, to let him know how much this means to you – [ Ссылка ]
