You might think the United States and Russia are very far apart. But actually we're only separated by 2.4 miles here in the Diomede Islands. How is this possible? Well, when the U.S purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, Big Diomede wasn't included in the deal. Both Islands are quite small , Big Diomede has an area of 14 square miles, and Little Diomede is 2 square miles. Also only Little Diomede has a permanent population with just 77 people. That's not all because the international date line passes between the islands Big Diomede is actually 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede. That means on new years while Big Diomede is the first to celebrate its sister just 2 miles east plays catch up for nearly a day to ring in the new year.
